How Does RAG Work?

First, your documents are broken into chunks and each chunk is converted into a mathematical 'embedding' , a numerical fingerprint of its meaning , and stored in a vector database. When a user asks a question, that question is also converted into an embedding and compared against all stored chunks to find the most semantically relevant ones. Those chunks are then passed to the LLM alongside the original question, and the model synthesises a coherent answer grounded in your actual content.
